Do you want to learn the guitar chords to Move like Jagger by Maroon 5? I love this song and sat down a few weeks ago to learn how to play it.
Move Like Jagger is actually a pretty easy song to play on electric guitar. There are only two chords to know – Bm7 and Em (or Em7). The trick is in how you play these chords.

Guitar Chords for Move Like Jagger
So there are a couple of things to know about learning how to play Move Like Jagger on guitar.
Firstly, the song has a very simple chord structure – 4 bars of Bm7 and then 4 bars of Em. That’s it.
Secondly, there’s a trick to playing the two chords – slides and hammer-ons. I’ll show you those in a minute.
Thirdly, there’s a temptation to overplay. Don’t! Sit in the groove and let the other instruments to their bit.
The first chord is a Bm7 chord. I play it up on the 14th fret.
I learnt this chord a few years ago, and it seems to fit well in this song. Of course there are other ways to play a Bm7 chord, but for this song, this is the chord shape that seems to work.
You can see the finger positions on the diagram on the left.
The important thing about playing this chord, is that you slide up from the 13th fret to the 14th fret at the start of each bar. I’ve listened to the song a few times and this seems to be the right way to play it.
After four bars of the Bm7, the guitar moves to an Em chord.
This is played on the 7th fret, with the root note on the A string.
The difference between the way you play this chord and the Bm7 is that this chord seems to be hammered on. So you bar your first finger across the 7th fret, and hammer on the other notes with your fingers on the first beat of each bar.
Practice the progression slowly at first and get used to moving your hands across the two different chord shapes.
Finally, have a listen to the song to get an idea of the strumming. I mentioned earlier, there’s a big temptation to overplay in this song. Probably the introduction of the song is the best place to hear the guitar part before the rest of the band come in and make it harder to hear.
Leave a comment below and let me know what you think about this lesson. Did I get it right, or do you think there are other ways to play it?
